The post-electric play “Mr. Burns” is coming to Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center August 25-27 and September 1-2.

Set at a time after the apocalypse, Anne Washburn's thought-provoking dark comedy starts with the animated sitcom “The Simpsons,” as a group of survivors sit around a campfire and try to recall the TV show’s "Cape Feare" episode.

Years later, those survivors become one of many wandering theater troupes keeping civilization alive by performing classic TV episodes. As society rebuilds, do our pop culture memories become the new mythology, the new religion? Considering “The Simpsons,” is that such a bad thing?

Directed by Pat Kight, "Mr. Burns" runs August 25, 26 and Sept. 1, 2 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance August 27 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $14 general admission, $10 students/seniors. Purchase online at linnbenton.edu/tickets.

For more information, contact the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center at 541-917-4531.

A grand opening for Linn-Benton Community College’s new Healthcare Occupations Center in Lebanon will be held Wednesday, August 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LBCC President Dr. Greg Hamann and Dr. Larry Mullins with Samaritan Health Services will speak at a ribbon cutting ceremony starting at 10 a.m., with an open house taking place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The center is located at 250 N. 5th St. in Lebanon, adjacent to COMP-NW Medical School.

The state-of-the-art 42,000 square foot facility brings LBCC healthcare programs into one learning space, providing greater opportunity for collaboration between programs and sharing of resources.

LBCC’s Diagnostic Imaging program was the first to move in June, with classes already in session. The remainder of healthcare programs are moving in over the summer with a fall term start.

LBCC healthcare programs include diagnostic imaging, nursing, nursing assistant, medical assistant, coding and reimbursement specialist, dental assistant, polysomnographic technician, phlebotomy, pharmacy technician and occupational therapy assistant.

Construction was made possible through $8 million in bond funds approved by voters in 2014, and $8 million in state matching funds.

LBCC will close on Monday, August 21. The decision to close came after review and discussion of the latest information on potential traffic impacts of the total solar eclipse and the effects on operations at LBCC of being open.

The August 21 closure will not affect the LBCC Eclipse Festival on August 20 and 21. We have 375 people camping on Aug. 20, plus an all-day science fair with entertainment that evening by the band Up Rising fire dancer Jodie Smalley. We'll be providing campers breakfast on Monday morning of the eclipse, and a couple of presentations are planned post eclipse to give people something to do until traffic (hopefully) quiets down.

The Sunday eclipse festival is free with your student ID.

Remember to view the eclipse only with approved glasses. Looking directly at the sun without approved eye protection at any time other than the one minute, 52 second totality can permanently damage your eyesight.  Here is a link to a list of approved viewing glasses: https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters
