South Albany High School Theater Arts will partner with Linn-Benton Community College this fall to produce the musical “Legally Blonde, The Musical,” which will play at LBCC’s Russell Tripp Performance Center in January.   

Benjamin Sell, director of Theater Arts at South Albany, said the partnership provides an opportunity for his students to work with LBCC’s theater department, and gives the school a larger venue for its performance. 

"One of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my career was turning people away at the door from this years’ sold out performances of Back to the 80's," said Sell. "Our students are doing amazing things and the community is incredibly supportive. This partnership gives us the chance to work with the talented people and great facilities at LBCC to put on an even better show for a much bigger audience.  We're so thankful to LBCC for the opportunity."

Sell says the collaboration will also benefit students by giving them a taste of college life and connecting them early to LBCC. “By the time these kids start thinking about next steps after high school, that transition becomes a lot less intimidating because of the hours they've already spent on campus,” he said.

“Legally Blonde, The Musical,” is based on the 2001 film. This fun, feel good musical features peppy songs, memorable dance numbers, and a great message about how staying true to yourself never goes out of style.

The musical tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl with a positive spirit that is only matched by her fabulousness. After her boyfriend dumps her because she isn’t “serious” enough, Elle enrolls at Harvard Law School to win him back and prove herself to the world.

Along the way, she finds a passion for the law and helping others, and achieves more than she ever imagined - all with her beloved little dog “Bruiser” at her side. 

“Legally Blonde, The Musical” was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 2008. It has since become one of the most frequently produced shows at high schools, colleges, and community theaters across the country, and makes its debut in the Albany/Corvallis region with this collaborative production between South Albany High School and LBCC.

Performance dates are January 18, 19, and 20 at 7:00 p.m., and January 21 at 2 p.m. Information on ticket sales will be available this fall.

A free open house and application event for CTE programs at Linn-Benton Community College will be held Monday, June 5, starting at 4 p.m. in Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Several CTE programs will be open including welding, mechatronics, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), machine tool, and the new non-destructive test and evaluation program.

The Linn-Benton Community College award-winning choirs will perform their spring concert “Horizons” Thursday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

LBCC Concert Choir and Chamber Choir will perform a variety of works including Gabriel’s Oboe from the movie “The Mission,” How Can I Keep from Singing, Earth Song, and Cell’s Planets.

Vocal a cappella ensembles Blue Light Special and The Sirens will perform a wide variety of popular favorites including Greedy, Water, 24K Magic, and Death of a Bachelor.

An introductory website workshop for entrepreneurs and small business owners will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College June 5.

Website Basics is a three-hour introductory workshop on website development, and covers overview of domain names, writing for the web, images and photo basics, and much more.

Workshop meets Monday, June 5 from 6 to 8:50 p.m. at the LBCC Luckiamute Center, room 115, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd., Albany. Cost is $79.

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College starting June 23.

Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations.

This three-day class session meets Friday, Saturday and Monday, June 23, 24 and 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-113, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost is $99.

Preregistration is required and students must be at least 14 to register. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form at the time of registration.

A solar eclipse festival and campout will be held at Linn-Benton Community College August 20-21 with star gazing and eclipse activities Sunday, and breakfast and eclipse viewing on Monday.

Tent campsites are open to LBCC students and guests until Friday, June 16 at a reduced rate of $40 per site for up to four people and includes breakfast and viewing glasses. There is a $10 fee for each additional camper up to three more per site.

Starting June 17, tent camping sites will be available to the public at $100 per site for up to four, and includes breakfast and viewing glasses. There is a $25 fee for each additional camper up to three more per site.

Festival begins Sunday evening, Aug. 20 with science activities, entertainment and a star party. Evening activities are free for campers, $5 for non-campers, and free for children under 18.

Monday, Aug. 21 begins with free breakfast for campers only, followed by viewing of the solar eclipse, which includes eclipse viewing glasses.

A Real Estate Broker Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting June 27, 2017.

Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Broker License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam.

This 10-week course will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning June 27 through Sept. 5 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Calapooia Center room CC-213.

The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have online capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory study session will be held on Saturday, the last week of the class.

Linn-Benton Community College’s Parenting Education Department recently received a renewal grant of $50,000 from the Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative for its Parenting Success Network.

The grant covers the 2017-18 school year, and is part of a multi-year initiative supporting expansion of high-quality parenting education programs and a stronger, more coordinated parenting education system statewide.

Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative is comprised of the Oregon Community Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, The Ford Family Foundation, The Collins Foundation and Oregon State University.

LBCC was in the first group of six programs to participate in the OPEC initiative, which has grown to 15 programs since 2010. This will be the eighth year LBCC has participated, bringing the total funds awarded to $540,000.

LBCC’s Parenting Success Network supports parenting education classes throughout Linn and Benton counties as well as numerous public awareness activities and efforts to build collaborative partnerships.

OPEC funds will be used to support 10 to 12 class series, five to eight workshops, five parent support activities, and two to three family activities over the next year. A primary goal of OPEC funding has been to change community norms, emphasizing the importance of positive parenting practices and normalizing engagement in parenting education.

LBCC Parenting Success Network’s website, parentingsuccessnetwork.org, offers parents information regarding local and online resources, a comprehensive calendar of all parenting education opportunities offered by multiple organizations, and a weekly Parenting Tips blog, and its Facebook page shares parenting thoughts and ideas. The network also supports professional development opportunities for parenting educators in the two-county area.

The 49th annual Linn-Benton Community College Commencement ceremony will be held Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Linn County Fair and Expo Willamette Event Center in Albany.

LBCC will award 911 degrees and certificates to 727 students this year. In addition, approximately 90 students will be awarded LBCC’s General Educational Development GED certificates.

Graduates should plan to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. at the Santiam Building behind the Willamette Event Center. Doors open for seating at 6 p.m. No tickets needed to attend. No strollers or backpacks. Carry bags will be checked.

A traditional bagpipe processional will be lead by the Portland Metro Pipe Band, with posting of the colors by the American Legion Travis Moothart Post 184 of Brownsville.

LBCC President Dr. Greg Hamann will give the welcome and present several awards including Phi Theta Kappa and Distinguished Alumni awards. Eric Slyter, outgoing LBCC student body president, will give the student address.

Degrees and certificates will be presented by President Hamann; Jim Merryman, LBCC Board of Education chair; Bruce Clemetsen, vice president, Student Affairs; Sally Widenmann, dean of Instruction; Chareane Wimbley-Gouveia, Faculty Association; and Tim Black, Adjunct Faculty Association.

Guided Tour QuickBooks is designed for those with no previous experience with a computer-based accounting system. Class meets June 27 and 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $89. 

QuickBooks I helps you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks. This five-week class meets for five sessions on Tuesday and Thursday beginning July 11 in LBCC’s Forum building, room F-202. Choose from the afternoon session, from 2 to 4 pm, or the evening session, from 6 to 8 pm. Cost for this non-credit class is $219.

Linn-Benton Community College has been approved by the State Board of Tax Practitioners to offer basic tax preparation courses starting in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Students who successfully complete the Basic 80-Hour Income Tax courses will be qualified to take the state board Licensed Tax Preparer (LTP) certification exam.

LTP certification will provide students the authorization to work as a licensed tax preparer in Oregon.

LBCC joins a handful of other Oregon community colleges and several private tax preparers to offer the basic tax education courses. LBCC’s courses were approved by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission this spring.

LBCC will offer the four-credit Income Tax Accounting I (BA 256) spring term 2018, followed by the four-credit Income Tax Accounting II (BA 257) fall term 2018, allowing students to take the LTP exam in December in time for tax season.

LBCC Business Management faculty members Alan Fudge, CPA; Mary Vedaa, CPA; and Chris Ruderman, CMA, CFM, will teach the courses. Each has a background in tax preparation.

Students who pass the LTP exam will be eligible to fulfill their Cooperative Work Experience requirement, which applies toward LBCC’s Associate of Science Accounting Technology degree.

After more than 80 years combined, Paulette Myers, left, and Teresa Patterson are retiring.

Two Long-time Staff Members Retire with Combined 80-plus Years of Service
With more than 80 years of combined service, long-time staff members Teresa Patterson and Paulette Myers are retiring, capping careers of 40 and 43 years respectively. Teresa started work as part-time, non-contract in the college registration office when she was 16, working through her junior and senior year at South Albany High School. Back then, the Registration office was in the Calapooia Center, where Human Resources is today. After graduating high school, Teresa was offered a full-time position in Registration, a job she held for 20 years before moving into her current position as IT Specialist with Information Services. Some of her coworkers call her the “Banner Queen,” since she was part of the original team that helped bring Banner online. Teresa’s last day was May 31, but she will continue to work part-time non-contracted (coming full-circle) through the end of the year. Paulette came to LBCC after graduating from Albany High School (now West Albany) in 1972. She spent a year taking secretarial courses, and then landed a job with the Health Occupations program, working as support staff for the nursing program for 26 years. For the past 17 years, Paulette has served as the Foundation coordinator. She officially retired from full-time contracted work in 2011, and continued to work in a part-time, non-contracted capacity. Her last day will be July 14.

Lawrence LaJoie and Richenda Hawkins Recognized as OER Champions 
Campus Store Manager Lawrence LaJoie and Librarian Richenda Hawkins received the Open Oregon Educational Resources OER Champion Awards. The pair were recognized for their work on the college Textbook Affordability Committee, which resulted in $1 million dollars in student savings. Lawrence was awarded in the category of Partnership with Bookstore, which recognized his efforts to help find affordable solutions, sharing information with the library about faculty who have adopted low-cost or open textbooks, and providing data to inform the library’s cost analysis tracking. Richenda was nominated in the category of Student Savings, Mentorship and Collaboration. She established and chairs the Textbook Affordability Committee, and helped create a tracking system with the bookstore to track savings across the college. Richenda was instrumental in bringing together stakeholders, including the bookstore, students, administrators, instructors and library staff, to work in a collaborative way, and has been a leader in the movement to help other college libraries in Oregon to provide affordable textbooks for students.

Meet Jessica Winans, Coordinator, Learning Innovation Center 

Jessica Winans

Jessica Winans is the new coordinator of the Learning Innovation Center, which is currently located in the Learning Center. Jess joined the college in February, and has been working to support faculty in their efforts to implement innovative teaching practices for improved student success. Jess' previous experience includes as director of eLearning and Academic Technology at Central Oregon Community College. Prior to moving to Oregon, she led eLearning efforts at the University of Montana Western, and taught college geography, education, and outdoor skills courses, and K-12 science. Jess studied environmental geography at Colgate University and continued studies in geography, curriculum and teaching at Michigan State University. She is currently working toward a PhD in higher education leadership from Colorado State University. Originally from Pennsylvania, Jess grew up along the Allegheny River. She now lives in Springfield with her husband, Weston, and their golden retriever, Sawyer.  She enjoys skiing, trail running, and backpacking. Student Life and Leadership Under New Direction
Student Life and Leadership will now be under the direction of Javier Cervantes, who currently directs the Diversity Achievement Center. The move will help build on the already strong relationship between the Student Leadership Council and DAC leaders. Javier’s will also have a new title, Director of Institutional Equity and Student Engagement. His strong background in student development, leadership development, and interest in connecting co-curricular learning to classroom learning will continue to strengthen student engagement.

New Signs Showcase Organic Landcare Efforts on Campus
Grounds manager George Van Keulen and grounds crew member Sam Bruch are now certified as Organic Lawn Care Accredited Professionals, and are among the first members of a newly-formed national Organic Landcare Association. George worked with the college marketing department to create signs that let students, staff and the public know about their efforts to move toward a more sustainable, natural landscape. LB grounds crew have been busy planting native, draught-tolerant plants that attract beneficial insects and wildlife native to our region, as well as substituting chemical control agents with organic natural methods, an often more labor intensive process.

Approximately 19,000 Credits Registered on Black Friday
Black Friday early fall registration results showed students registered for nearly 19,000 credits in 14 hours. Kudos to Diana Boro-Boswell and the Black Friday team for their hard work getting students ready to return for fall term.

Students from Claggett Creek Middle School in Keizer visited the college Culinary Arts classroom May 4 as part of a middle school visit activity day coordinated by Culinary Faculty Todd Ketterman. The students learned how to decorate cupcakes, and culinary students roamed the room to help them with their technique.

After more than 80 years of combined service, Paulette Myers, left, and Teresa Patterson are retiring.

With more than 80 years of combined service, long-time staff members Teresa Patterson and Paulette Myers are retiring, capping careers of 40 and 43 years respectively.

Teresa started work as part-time, non-contract in the college registration office when she was 16, working through her junior and senior year at South Albany High School. Back then, the Registration office was in the Calapooia Center, where Human Resources is today.

After graduating high school, Teresa was offered a full-time position in Registration, a job she held for 20 years before moving into her current position as IT Specialist with Information Services. Some of her coworkers call her the “Banner Queen,” since she was part of the original team that helped bring Banner online. Teresa’s last day was May 31, but she will continue to work part-time non-contracted (coming full-circle) through the end of this year.

A new class on Mindfulness and Relaxation will be held at Linn-Benton Community College starting June 26.

This 40-minute class consist of work-attire friendly movement, guided meditation and time to just sit, breathe and be to help you be more relaxed and focused to thrive, not just survive, your afternoon.

This 10-week class meets Mondays from 12 to 12:40 p.m. starting June 26 at LBCC Albany Campus. Cost is $49.

Better Bones and Balance class will be offered through LBCC Community Education starting June 28.

Improve your balance and coordination, reduce your risk for falls, and see an increase in muscle tone and overall body fitness.

Based on OSU Bone Research Lab studies, this exercise program has been shown to slow the rate of bone loss in adults of all ages.

This 10-week class meets Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 9:50 a.m. starting June 28 at Fitness Over 50, 5460 SW Philomath Blvd, Corvallis. Cost is $69.
