Dave McIntire photograph - Mt. Rainer "Renticular Cloud."
An exhibit of photographs of Mount Rainier by Corvallis photographer Dave McIntire will be on display Jan. 9-31 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany.

A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The public is invited.

The exhibit features more than 20 of McIntire's large color and black-and-white images, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. Several reveal the massive, 14,411-foot volcanic peak surrounded by dramatic, swirling clouds and cloaked in snow and ice. Others explore the glaciers slowly snaking down the mountain's slopes, and the many waterfalls, wildflower meadows and tumbling steams in the surrounding wilderness. One particularly impressive image presents a 6-foot long panorama of the mountain flanked by several neighboring peaks.

A retired botany professor at Oregon State University, the 81-year-old McIntire has devoted more than 20 years to photographing Mount Rainier and the national park that contains it. In his younger days he would hike for miles to reach a special vantage point from which to frame the highest peak in the Cascade Range.

"I have never seen a photograph of Mount Rainier that has the same intense emotional impact on me as being in the presence of this magnificent monolith in person," McIntire says. "I feel that, at best, my photographs represent a small sample of the real world experience. Nevertheless, I treasure these pictures because they allow me to remember and relive some of the best experiences in my life as a photographer."

The LBCC South Santiam Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

"Girl on Steps" charcoal drawing by Audra Mote.
Graphic arts major Audra Mote is the featured student artist in the Calapooia Center Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW., this month.

Mote is showing a selection of her paintings, drawings and calligraphy through Jan. 31.

A resident of Corvallis who grew up in Quebec and Vermont, Mote is in her second year of the LBCC graphic arts program. She has an undergraduate degree in languages and took post-graduate studies in calligraphy, drawing and painting before enrolling at LBCC in 2012.

Her collection of calligraphy and art on display in the Calapooia Center Gallery contains pieces that take their inspiration from things that have special meaning for her, including family ties, poignant words and beautiful views. The charcoal drawing titled "Girl on Steps" is especially meaningful, she said, because it is a study from a photograph of a girl who was the victim of the child sex trade in Cambodia. That work won a Juror's Choice Award in last spring's Art Student Juried Show.

The LBCC Calapooia Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and evenings when events are scheduled.

NSH Gallery Features Four Oregon Artist in Invitational Exhibit

Cynthia Spencer "Hieroglyphs Of The Heart."
Four Oregon artists are exhibiting paintings and sculptures in the fourth annual LBCC Invitational through Feb. 28 in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Portland painter William Park and Salem multi-media artist Kristin Kuhns share the galleries with Corvallis artists Cynthia Spencer and Suzanne Campbell (who uses the psuedonym S Tellez).

A public reception and gallery talk with the artists will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30, from noon to 1 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium.

•William Park has exhibited his striking oil paintings at various venues around the Northwest since the early 1990s, including several solo exhibits at Portland's Augen and Mark Woolley galleries, and was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Oregon Art Beat" in 2010. For the LBCC Invitational, Park is showing a selection of large contemporary portraits from his "Fridays with Fred" series. Park describes the series as an on-going "collaboration" with his sitter, Fred Nemo, a one-time stranger who first sat for a portrait in 2007, and who has been visiting Park's studio weekly ever since.

•Kristin Kuhns lives in West Salem, where she pursues a dual career as a professional artist and part-time teacher at Valley Inquiry Charter School.  She began her studio practice 30 years ago while living in Maui, and since coming to Oregon her work has taken several bold, new directions, including combining textiles with painted canvas, and installations involving wood and ceramics. Her work challenges the viewer to consider his or her relationship to nature, especially the forest.

•Cynthia Spencer has been showing her pottery at craft fairs and galleries around the Northwest since 1987 and is known for both her utilitarian ceramics as well as her sculptural work. Her functional pieces in the LBCC Invitational are constructed from slabs of clay rather than thrown on a potter's wheel, and are wood-fired in a traditional anagama kiln. Her sculptures in the show combine clay with wire and paper to create fanciful forms.

•Suzanne Campbell (aka S Tellez) is known for creating whimsical constructions that can take the form of tiny dioramas inside anything from eggshells to cigar boxes, as well as for her paintings and sculptures that celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. She describes one of her recurring themes as an exploration of "the absurdity of materialism in a consumer society." She also draws inspiration from the Mexican illustrator, Jose Guadalupe Posada, who saw death as the "great equalizer of all social classes." Representatives of both bodies of work are in the Invitational exhibit.

The four artists will be exhibiting on both floors of the NSH Galleries, which are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
