HOC and ATTC Projects can be Viewed Online

The activity at two Linn-Benton Community College construction sites in Lebanon is about to increase, and anyone interested in monitoring the progress can watch it happen on the college web site.

Site prep and foundation work are being completed for the final buildings at the Advanced Transportation Technology Center and the Healthcare Occupations Center buildings. Walls will start to go up soon.

The construction progress is being recorded each day, and the progress is compressed in a brief time-lapse that can be viewed at linnbenton.edu/building-projects by clicking on either the ATTC or HOC link. The site also includes the latest updates on all LBCC building projects.

The $7.9 million, 37,000-square-foot ATTC project is being constructed by T.S. Gray Construction and Wildish Construction. It is on budget and is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2016.

New construction at the ATTC will include an improved home for the Heavy Equipment Diesel program and the creation of an Innovation Center will provide space to train working mechanics to work on alternative fuel vehicles, in addition to providing a space for meeting focused on how to increase community benefit from new propulsion options for commercial and private transportation.

The construction contract for the $16 million, 42,000-square-foot Healthcare Occupations Center was recently awarded to Triplett-Wellman Contractors. Also on budget, the project is expected to be completed by spring of 2017.

The new HOC, located adjacent to COMP-NW medical school on the Samaritan Health Campus in Lebanon, will enable consolidation of all of LBCC’s medical programs in a single location, and create opportunities for partnerships with nearby medical training and healthcare providers.

All contracts were awarded based on a competitive bid process.

The projects were made possible by voter approval of a construction bond measure in 2014. Along with state and federal grants, the construction program funded by those bonds also includes the expansion of the Benton Center in Corvallis, and in modernizing space at the Albany campus, with a focus on improving facilities for job-related programs.

LBCC Benton Center property purchase completed

Linn-Benton Community College has completed the purchase of property to expand the Benton Center in Corvallis, and plans to begin a community-involved process of creating plans for that expansion.

“Now we can begin to plan earnestly,” said Jeff Davis, Benton Center Director. “We have community members serving on the project steering committee, and we’ll be looking for other ways to allow for community engagement in the process.”

The project will add 20,000 square feet of instruction spaces and more than double parking to more than 250 spaces to help address shortages in both areas that restrict offerings at the center. The new property is located just north of the Benton Center.

The specific timeline for project to begin still depends on finding an acceptable new location for the Corvallis operation of First Student, Inc. The company, which provides school bus transportation for school districts throughout the United States including Corvallis, is currently leasing the property.

A small portion of the property is already available, so some additional parking may be added in the coming months.

The Benton Center project steering committee will meet again during summer to further develop plans, Davis said.

The $8 million expansion of the Benton Center is made possible by bonds approved by voters in 2014. The building program also includes a new Healthcare Occupations Center in Lebanon, the complete of the next phases of the Advanced Transportation Technology Center in Lebanon, and the modernization of facilities on the Albany campus with a focus on trade-related programs that lead directly to jobs in the region.

Bruce Clemetsen, vice president, Student Affairs, shared the following information on the College Coach program at LBCC: The College Coach program connects current LBCC students with K-12 students in their local communities. The program was started by an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer who was able to get the program off the ground and create a solid foundation from which the program continues to grow. Members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society are taking the lead in making sure College Coach continues to grow and thrive. Both PTK members and other LBCC student volunteers devote time from their busy schedules in local schools in two different formats. The first is tutoring, which is offered to local schools in a variety of subject areas (elementary, middle and secondary schools). The second is College Club, an after school program for elementary school students that is facilitated by LBCC students and engages participants in learning more about what it means to go to College, the wide range of opportunities available to them, and helps them build a relationship with a College mentor who can show them that College is an option. PTK students have been committed to offering these services in some of our local schools with the highest level of need to try to instill a college going culture from early on in a youth's education. As a capstone experience, College Club students take a field trip to the Albany campus to get a first hand look at what college life is like. K-12 students are not the only ones who benefit from the College Coach program, as the LBCC student volunteers also express learning a lot and building their own leadership and teaching skills in the process.

An addendum to the Independent Association of Classified Employees contract allows for a bilingual pay incentive compensation to classified employees who demonstrate Spanish language proficiency, effective June 1. The incentive allows for a $140 per month stipend for full-time employees, with a prorated amount for less than full-time. In return, employees receiving compensation would be required to respond to requests for bilingual translation. Additional languages may be considered if a need arises. The added compensation supports efforts around the college’s core theme of cultural richness and strategic goal of equity, as well as the college values.

Students in the Automotive Tech program at the ATTC.
The college Foundation has a great option for you to donate personal items to benefit college programs and needs. Called “Gifts-in-Kind,” donations are tax-deductible and include vehicles, planes, boats, RV’s, buses, works of art, crops, production materials, tangible items, horses and livestock.  Items need to be appropriate and usable by the department or program designated. Additional items may be considered. Gifts-In-Kind valued at $5,000 or more may impact your taxes. Contact a professional IRS or tax preparer for advice. Note: If LBCC’s Automotive Program is unable to take your vehicle, you can still donate the vehicle to the Foundation and get a tax deduction. The Foundation has partnered with Automotive Recovery Services, which will arrange to pick up your vehicle for free and provide a tax receipt. Proceeds from the ARS auction of your vehicle will come directly to the LBCC Foundation. Simply call ARS at 1-800-240-0160 to donate for the benefit of the LBCC Foundation.
