LBCC Dance Club LBCC Dance Club will present their spring dance performance “Expressions” May 29 at 7 p.m. and May 30 at 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

LBCC dance club students will perform a variety of choreographed dances with special guests Corvallis East Dream Chinese Dance Group, Albany Legacy Ballet Studio, and Ramya Raman performing India dance.

Tickets are $8 general admission, $6 for students and seniors. Kids four and under are free. Purchase tickets at the door one hour prior to performance.

The LBCC Benton Center Pottery Show and Sale will be held Friday, June 5 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the center’s ceramics studio, 757 NW Polk Avenue, Corvallis.

LBCC ceramic instructors and students will sell their raku, high fire, salt fire and wood fire pieces. A portion of all sales supports the ceramics studio.

A Real Estate Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting June 24.

Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position your self for the up-turn. 

This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning June 24 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW.

The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory study session will be held on Saturday, last day of the class, TBA.

Community members Bob Lowry and Doris Johnston will be honored with Linn-Benton Community College Distinguished Citizens awards at the college's commencement ceremony June 11. 

Established in 1971, the award honors community members who have provided leadership and service to the college and their communities.

A retired Albany businessman, Lowry is philanthropist and veteran who has given generously to the LBCC Foundation over the years, and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation since 2006.

Lowry also serves as a member of the Albany General Hospital Foundation, and helped bring the Evergreen Hospice House to completion. He is past board member of the Mennonite Village Foundation and Oregonians for Food and Shelter, past president of the Oregon Seed Trade Association and Pacific Seedsmen Association; and past chairman of the Oregon Seed Council.

Johnston, of Albany, is the Regional Community Manager for Pacific Power. She serves as the current president of the LBCC Foundation Board of Trustees, where she provides vision and leadership toward establishing strong relationships that lead to financial support of the LBCC Foundation, which in turn supports the students and programs at LBCC. 

As the chairperson for LBCC for the Community, Johnston was instrumental in running the LBCC Bond campaign that led to passage of the $34 million college bond last fall, which will help transform the college’s ability to serve job training needs in health care and industrial trades.

Johnston also served as past chair of several area chambers of commerce, is active with the Albany Community Leadership Roundtable, and serves on the Governmental Affairs, Women in Business, and Businesses on Display committees.  She is an executive committee member of the Albany-Millersburg Economic Development Corp., serves on the Interstate 5/Jefferson Task Force and the Workforce Board for Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Albany, where she serves as the club’s secretary and chair.

Johnston also helps raise funds for and supports the Albany Boys & Girls Club, the United Way and Rotary.

The 47th annual Linn-Benton Community College Commencement Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11 at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in the Willamette Event Center in Albany.

LBCC will award 1,065 degrees and certificates to 824 students this year. In addition, approximately 25 students completed LBCC’s General Educational Development program and will receive their certificates at commencement.

Graduates should plan to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. at the Santiam Building behind the Expo Center. Doors open for seating at 6 p.m. No tickets are needed to attend the ceremony.

A traditional bagpipe processional will be lead by the Portland Metro Pipe Band, with posting of the colors by the American Legion Travis Moothart Post 184 of Brownsville.

LBCC President Dr. Greg Hamann will give the welcome and present several awards including Phi Theta Kappa and Distinguished Alumni awards. Jeff Lehn, LBCC student body vice president, will give the student address.

A three day Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany starting June 16.

Popular among youth ages 14-18, the State of Oregon permits youth starting at age 14 to operate power-driven farm machinery for employers provided they pass training in a vocational agricultural safety program.

LBCC’s course places emphasis on safety, and is operated in accordance with federal regulations. The class involves some initial hands on training with farm machinery.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that tractor accidents on farms cause the highest number of fatalities, with tractor overturns accounting for 44 percent of all tractor fatalities.

The class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. Cost for this non-credit course is $96.50 and includes materials.

Pre-registration is required and limited seating is available. Registration packets are available at all LBCC centers or online at www.linnbenton.edu/tractor-safety.

Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form to be submitted to the Albany office within 24 hours of registration.

Chris Nystrom, director of the Community Education Department at Linn-Benton Community College, and Chelsea Nordby, coordinator of Community Education for LBCC Benton County, have received the designation of Certified Program Planner by the Learning Resources Network, an international association in lifelong learning.

The CCP designation reflects demonstrated in-depth knowledge in ten key areas of lifelong learning. Nystrom and Nordby will be recognized at LERN's annual conference in December.

"The CPP designation is a standard of achievement in the knowledge and understanding of lifelong learning," noted LERN President William Draves. "Certified Program Planners are recognized as professionals in the field of educational programming."

Founded in 1974, LERN has over 4,500 members, with 3,000 CPP's awarded throughout the world. LERN provides "Information That Works!" to over 10,000 providers of lifelong learning a year.

This summer, a variety of new, fun classes for teens ages 14-18 will be held through Linn-Benton Community College’s Community Education.

Students can choose from recreation, adventure, cooking, arts, crafts, and more including Geocaching with GPS, Video Storytelling, “Hey, Cool Shirt” t-shirt design, Mountain Bike Mojo, Backyard Beekeeping, and Teen Ranch horse camp. Class times are designed for easy scheduling around vacations and sports.

ART & ETSY is a two-part workshop held in Corvallis to help your teen get creative, and then get down to business. Bring your own product to polish up, or discover your inner artist and bring to life a new creation. Immerse yourself in product design and then create a catchy shop name and an inviting online presence.   Mondays & Wednesdays from 2-3:50 p.m. starting July 27 (2 weeks). Cost: $79.

BACKYARD BEEKEEPING will offer an opportunity to make a bee hotel and learn about the importance of bees. Bee hotels, also called nests or houses, are a great way to attract pollinators to your family’s flower or vegetable garden. Each class is one evening and will be offered June 23 in Sweet Home, June 30 in Lebanon, July 14 in Albany, and July 28 in Corvallis, from 5-7:50 p.m.  Cost: $59.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING is the best way to translate your words and images into a powerful visual story. Combine narration, music, images, graphic design, photo manipulation and video editing to make your story memorable. Monday, Wednesday & Friday the week of August 17 from 9-11:50 a.m. in Corvallis. GEOCACHING WITH GPS will help you build potentially life-saving navigation skills using a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) unit while also enjoying one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities - Geocaching! There are thousands of geocaches in Linn-Benton County, so class members can hunt while using valuable positioning and navigation technology in the great outdoors. Bring handheld GPS receiver. HEY, COOL SHIRT allows you to create a one-of-a-kind t-shirt with your own unique logo. Dive into the secrets of logo design by studying the work of companies like APPLE and Nike.  Then, create your own logo using Adobe Illustrator software and transfer to Mark-Ease before screen printing to your t-shirt. This class is hands-on! Please bring a t-shirt for printing. Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9-11:50 a.m. starting July 7, 2 weeks.  At Santiam Christian School, Adair Village. Cost: $129.

MOSAIC MASHUP will enable you to create a mosaic masterpiece from recycled materials that grab your heart. Incorporating paper, glass tiles, ceramic tiles, and a wide selection of other materials, you will cultivate a mosaic treasure in a supportive group atmosphere. MOUNTAIN BIKE MOJO is a one-day clinic that will provide the basic skills and techniques for participants to increase their enjoyment in the fast growing sport of mountain biking. The incredible new Alsea Falls "flow trail" is the training ground for this course. Learn body positioning and balance, switchbacks and cornering, braking and maneuvering obstacles, wheel lifts, pumping, safety, trails stewardship and more! TEEN RANCH: HORSE CAMP offers the adventure of horse handling and riding. Working with gentle and well-trained horses, you will receive hands-on instruction in grooming, tacking up, and basic horse care. Once you have mounted your horse, master the basics of position, control and safety. For beginning riders ages 14-18 with little horse experience. THE OPEN MINDED OMLETTE. As a skilled omelet cook, you will soon create dozens of omelets variations to please the family. In SEWING THE FUTURE you can complete a project with or without a commercial pattern. Apply various methods of sewing, mending and altering clothing and other items. Linn-Benton Community College Parenting Education received a $50,000 renewal grant from the Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative.

The grant is part of a multi-year initiative supporting expansion of high-quality parenting education programs and a stronger, more coordinated parenting education system statewide.

The Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative is comprised of the Oregon Community Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, The Ford Family Foundation, The Collins Foundation and Oregon State University.

LBCC was in the first group of six programs to participate in this initiative, which has grown to 15 programs since 2010. This will be the sixth year of LBCC’s participation, bringing the total funding awarded to $440,000.

LBCC’s project, named the Parenting Success Network, supports parenting education classes throughout Linn and Benton counties as well as numerous public awareness activities and efforts to build collaborative partnerships.

OPEC funds will be used to support class series, workshops, parent support activities and family activities for 2015-2016. A primary goal of OPEC has been to change community norms, emphasizing the importance of positive parenting practices and normalizing engagement in parenting education.

Parenting Success Network hosts a website, parentingsuccessnetwork.org, which offers parents information regarding local and online resources, a comprehensive calendar of all parenting education opportunities offered by multiple organizations, as well as a weekly Parenting Tips blog.

Parenting Success Network hosts a popular Facebook page filled with parenting thoughts and ideas, and supports professional development opportunities for all parenting educators in the two-county area.

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College Saturday, June 27 from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the college, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load.

Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer.

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center.

Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system. 

Class will meet June 23 and 25, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.  

QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2015. This 10-hour class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays June 30 to July 14 from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-202. Cost for this non-credit class is $195.

A Traffic Control Flagger Certification course will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Saturday, July 11 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room, CC-211, Calapooia Center building, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW Albany. 

Learn basic visual flagging signals, two-way radio use, sign setting regulations, traffic control standards, use of personal protective equipment, and work zone set up procedures to make worksites safe and keep traffic moving safely.

Upon completion of the four and a half hours of training and meeting the requirements, students will be certified to flag traffic in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Washington.

Cost for the course is $109, which includes all materials, certification test and card.  Minimum Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

A Summer Volleyball Clinic will be held at Linn-Benton Community College August 3, 4 and 5 for students entering grades seven through nine.

The clinic provides three days of three-hour sessions with instruction on all aspects of the game including serving, passing, hitting, setting, blocking and defense.

Clinic meets from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day in the LBCC Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Cost is $60 per player if registered before July 20, and $75 after. Preregistration is preferred.

Albany, OR.- For the second year in a row, Linn-Benton Community College students participated in launching a space rocket from NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, one of only three community colleges in the US to participate.

Eight members of the LBCC Space Exploration Club headed to Wallops at the end of June for a RockSat-C workshop, where the students assembled a payload project that was attached to a two-stage rocket and launched on June 25, reaching an altitude of 71 miles, officially in space.

LBCC is an affiliate of the NASA Oregon Space Grant Consortium (OSGC), and continues to develop as a regional center for space studies and student-focused space exploration.

In 2014, LBCC sent three students and their advisor, LBCC computer systems instructor Parker Swanson, to a RockOn workshop in Virginia. The students, dubbed “Rocket Women” by Swanson, returned full of enthusiasm and committed to the next step in rocket-carried space science.

“This year, the students participated in the higher-level RockSat-C program, a nine-month process in which they selected a space science experiment, designed and built the apparatus to accomplish it, qualified it to exacting NASA space-flight standards, and launched it along with other student experiments at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia,” said Swanson.

The 12 members of the Space Exploration Club developed their project during the past school year, which included an array of radioactive-particle detectors capable of discriminating between low-energy particles and high-energy cosmic rays.

The rocket’s instrument payload splashed down by parachute in the Atlantic and returned to shore, where each team retrieved their payload.

“When the team displayed their data on the computer, they were thrilled to learn that their experiment had been a complete success,” said Swanson.

The Space Exploration Club plans to participate in either another “RockSat-C” experiment or a more advanced rocket flight in the “RockSat-X” program in 2016. Students also are planning space-science experiments using small “CubeSat” satellites and high-altitude balloons.

LBCC is rolling out its participation in an official Space Studies major and minor curriculum, in cooperation with Oregon State University and others affiliated with OSGC. For more information, contact Parker.Swanson@linnbenton.edu.

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College.

This five session course will meet July 14, 16, 21, and 23, from 6:00-10:00 pm, and Saturday, July 18 from 9:00 am -1:00 pm, on the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-213.

The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing.

Topics include employer requirements and employee rights, Oregon lien and contract law, taxes/recordkeeping, best business practices, project and time management, estimating and scheduling, building codes, OR-OSHA requirements, job site safety, environmental laws, and test taking strategies in compliance with ORS 701-280. 

Advance registration is required by July 7. Cost for the five sessions is $290 and includes a copy of the 11th Edition of the Oregon Contractors Reference Manual.

As part of a legislative effort to support statewide economic development and clean environment, the Advanced Transportation Technology Center at Linn-Benton Community College received $1.5 million in Oregon’s adopted state budget.

The funding was an economic development allocation that came from outside the higher education budget. It will help build and equip phases II and III of the center, which will include space to provide training in alternative fuel vehicles for mechanics already working, as well as a new home for the heavy equipment/diesel technology program.

The initial idea to advance the state’s economic development goals via support of the ATTC came from the Governor’s office, which included it in the Business Oregon budget. When it was cut from the budget, a bipartisan coalition of 21 State Representatives petitioned the budget co-chairs to include it elsewhere. State senators from throughout Oregon also helped with the effort.

“We’ve received interest and support of this effort from every corner of the state – and from across the nation,” said LBCC President Greg Hamann. “We’re grateful, but not surprised by the widespread support of this project. It’s already making a difference.”

The Southern Willamette Regional Solutions Advisory Committee listed this as one of its priorities. Because this was a statewide economic development effort, LBCC advocated that this be an economic development allocation rather than educational appropriation. The legislature decided to add money to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission budget.

Voter’s approved partial funding for the remainder of the project as part of a funding package on the Nov. 2014 ballot. The college continues to work with industry, industry associations and private donors to raise the remaining $2 million to complete the project.

Phase I of the ATTC opened in 2013, addressing the needs of automobile mechanics who will need to work on both traditional and alternative fuel passenger vehicles. Phase I was built with $6.7 million, which was a combination of $3.6 million in federal, local and state funds in addition to $3.1 million of private funds from industry and individuals.

The class Open Minded Omelet will help your teen become a skilled omelet cook, creating dozens of omelet variations. Students learn the secrets of the basic omelet and then build it up with a mix of ingredients. Class will meet Tuesday, July 28, from 1 to 3:50 p.m. at Santiam Christian School in Albany. Cost is $39.
